Program

Transition is an in-patient recovery facility for young Jewish men. Founded in 2002, at the behest of Rabbi Dr. Abraham J. Twerski, the facility maintains all kosher dietary regulations and accommodates Sabbath observers.

The program follows the twelve-step recovery model, focusing on its foundation in Jewish thought and philosophy. The daily schedule is structured, yet flexible. The facility has close ties with the Jewish Community of Pittsburgh, allowing many opportunities for volunteer work. For those interested in completing their high school equivalency certification, GED classes are offered through our education program. Frequent participation in physical activities, such as hiking, basketball, and ice skating, provide these young men new ways of enjoying life without the use of drugs.

Over 100 young Jewish adults have completed the Transition program and reclaimed their lives from the devastation caused by drugs and alcohol abuse.

Transition's unique program offers:

  • Group and individually designed counseling sessions.
  • Daily attendance at 12-step meetings.
  • Character development and learning interpersonal skills in a group living environment.
  • Teaching personal responsibility and discipline through assigned tasks and chores.
  • Regular recreational outings to encourage participation in new forms of sober entertainment.
  • Education Program consisting of a wide variety of scholastic opportunities.
  • Formation of life-long friendships and creation of a support group who share the goal of living a drug and alcohol free life-style.
  • Extended Care program lasting 3-6 months, depending on the needs of each individual.
  • Reconnection and exploration in regards to religious and spiritual issues.
  • A chance at a new way of life based on Jewish principles.
  • Caring and knowledgeable staff on duty 24 hours a day providing supervision as well as guidance.

"It's time we got our heads out of the sand and realized that there are many young men with drug or alcohol problems that could devastate them and their families, and get them proper treatment.” - Abraham J. Twerski, MD

The education program and classroom have been gratefully dedicated in memory of Mr. Charles M. Morris
